Rt Hon Sir George Young Bt MP

Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal

Sir George Young Bt MP was born in 1941 and was educated at Eton before attending Christ Church, Oxford and the University of Surrey where he gained a postgraduate degree.

First elected to Parliament in 1974, his early Ministerial career included spells at the Departments for Health, Environment and Housing. He served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury (1994-1995) and as Secretary of State for Transport between 1995 and 1997.

Sir George was Shadow Leader of the House of Commons between 1998 and 2000 and 2009 and 2010, having been Shadow Defence Secretary from May 1997 until June 1998. Sir George previously served on the Modernisation of the House of Commons Committee (1998-2000) and between 2001 and 2009 was Chairman of the Select Committee on Standards and Privileges.

Sir George was appointed Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal in May 2010.
